21st Oct 2008 Getting Ahead of the Pack
If before we thought that earning a living was like a rat race. Well, with the economic situation we are in right now, that rat race before seems like child play now. With this new dilemma...How do we get ahead of the pack?
For most of the companies that has acknowledged the benefits of the internet, using the internet is not only covering a bigger range of customers, it is also very economical. To be ahead of the pack, we need to make sure that our company is at par or better yet ahead of our competitors.
But before answering the question of how to get ahead of the pack, we would need to answer another question. How good is our web site? There are websites that measure the ranking of our website, called page rank. Page rank is a value that Google assigns to a web page based on the importance of the page on the internet that is determined by the number of incoming links to that web page and few other factors. It is Google?s measurement of how important a page is and affects search rankings. This is an index that values Web pages on a scale of 0 to 10, based largely on link popularity. This means that the higher our web site is listed in the various search engines that means more traffic for us. This could also mean that we have more visits than our competitors. If the visitors understand what a page rank is they will place our website in a higher esteem than our competitors and feel that our content is more valuable and insightful.
How does Google determine our page rank? One way to help determine one?s page rank is when another site links to our page with a backlinks. A backlinks refers to all of the web pages that link to another web page. The more backlinks we receive from other pages the higher our page rank is. It is also better to make sure the backlinks are coming from sites that have content on the same theme as ours. Not only should we have a high page rank we would also need to have a quality backlinks.
To explain on what a good backlink quality is, let me borrow an article/diagram written by Jim Boykin (www.jimboykin.com/site-backlinks/).
Referring to the image found in this article, you see the red line in the middle. That site might not have the most backlinks?.but it?s in the center of the activity?.it?s got the right links?.the hubs and the authorities?.it doesn?t have a link from everyone, but it?s got the right links.
You can see exactly where you stand by doing a Google search for page rank. This should help you to find some of the sites out there that measure page rank. Once you find a site all you have to do is put your own URL in the designated box and you will have your answer.
Making sure to have a good page rank (good page rank is 6), would certainly give us an advantage.
